先月27日、メリーランド州ボルティモアの鉄橋が貨物船の衝突により崩落した事故で、貨物船の会社がその責任を問われているというニュース記事からの引用です。

The city of Baltimore said the owners of the Dali cargo ship should be held accountable in last month’s crash and subsequent collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to a new court filing. The crash left six people who were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse dead.

In court papers filed on Monday, Baltimore is accusing parent company, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., of gross and potentially criminal negligence when it put an "unseaworthy vessel" into the water on March 26, just moments before it crashed into a structure supporting the bridge and causing it to topple, ABC News reported.

鉄橋の修復等にかかる賠償請求は数十億ドルとも言われているようですが、船の運航会社は賠償金の減免を要求しているようです。

事故の原因は100パーセント会社側にあるというのがボルティモア市側の見解ですが、その過失について、

it put an "unseaworthy vessel" into the water on March 26

と書かれたくだりがあります。

この、"unseaworthy"という表現はコンテクストから意味するところはだいたい想像がつきますが、初めて見るものです。ちょっと変わった表現だと思いませんか？

辞書にはちゃんと"unseaworthy"のエントリがあって、

（船舶が）航行に適さない、耐航性（耐波性）のない

と載っています。

つまり、海上を航行させるのに相応しくない船舶（unseaworthy vessel）を運航させたことを過失であるとしている訳です。

この"unseaworthy"という単語を分析すると、"seaworthy"という単語に否定の接頭辞un-が付いたものと解釈できます。果たして"seaworthy"という単語も存在し、その意味は、航海に適した、安全航行が可能な、というものなのでした。

さて、辞書には類似の表現として、"airworthy"なる単語を挙げており、こちらは航空機が航空飛行に適している、という意味です。

ところで、こうした単語の、-worthyという接尾辞は、

〜に適している

という意味を持つものであることが、これまた辞書に乗っています。

-worthyという単語で比較的馴染みがあるのは、

trustworthy

newsworthy

blameworthy

などではないでしょうか。

これらの-worthyは、〜に値する、という意味を持つもので、今日取り上げた"unseaworthy"の-worthyとは意味が異なっていることに注目して下さい。

今回の事故で崩落した鉄橋、Francis Scott Key Bridgeはボルティモア湾にかかる長さ約2.6キロの橋ですが、Francis Scott Keyという人物はアメリカ国歌（「星条旗」）の歌詞を書いた人なんだそうです。

"adaptogen"というのは天然のハーブなどを原料とした、いわゆるサプリメントの類いのようですが、社会的なストレスや不安を和らげる効果があるとされ、SNS等を通じて注目を集めているといいます。

"adaptogen"という単語はスペルからも想像がつくように、適応を意味する"adapt"に接尾辞-gen（生む、生じさせる、の意）が付いたものです。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン版）には載っていて、

a nontoxic substance and especially a plant extract that is held to increase the body's ability to resist the damaging effects of stress and promote or restore normal physiological functioning

と定義されています。語源はロシア語（adaptatsiya）というのがまた興味深いところです。

ところで、記事によれば"adaptogen"の代表的なものとしては朝鮮人参（ginseng）などがあり、要は漢方？と思ってしまいます。

免疫力を高めたり、抗酸化作用のあるこうした植物由来の天然成分が注目されるのには古代インド、古代中国に遡る歴史やルーツに魅了される面はあるでしょう。

サプリメントと言えば、死亡例も発生して世間を騒がせた紅麹問題（こちらはハーブではなく、菌ですが）が記憶に新しいところです。

"adaptogen"も特効薬ではないと記事にはありますから、過信と過剰摂取は慎むべきでしょう。

cutthroat

ここのところ、電気自動車（EV）メーカー、テスラの業績不振が報じられています。

先週は10％の人員削減というニュースを耳にしましたが、この週末は同社の生産台数が減少に転じ、既存モデルの値下げに踏み切ったというものでした。

同社の苦戦の背景には中国EVメーカーとの熾烈な競争があります。

引用したのはロイターの記事ですが、テスラ社内では大衆向け廉価版とも言える、低価格のEV開発プロジェクトからの撤退も囁かれているとか。

同社のEVは決して安いものではありませんが、CEOのイーロン・マスク氏はかねてより、大衆向けのEVの展開を公言していたところ、BYD社を始めとする中国EVメーカーが生産する格安のEVによる攻勢に、方向転換を余儀なくされている状況でしょうか。

記事では、

とあります。EV市場の熾烈なシェア争いということですが、後段では、

cut-throat competition in China

とも表現されています。

"cut-throat"（ハイフン無しで、cutthroatとも）、文字通りには喉を切る、という意味で穏やかではありませんが、"cut-throat competition"はしばしば食うか食われるかの無慈悲な争い、熾烈な競争という意味で用いられます。

alibi

アイダホ州で大学生ら4人が殺害された事件の容疑者の審理を報じる記事を読みました。

4人の殺人容疑で逮捕されたBryn Kohberger容疑者の弁護側は、事件発生時刻とされる2022年11月13日午前4時過ぎ、容疑者は事件現場から遠く離れた場所に居たため、事件への関与は無いと主張しているようです。

いわゆるアリバイがある、というやつです。

容疑者は深夜ドライブや早朝にかけてのハイキングを趣味にしていたといい、当日も現場から30マイル以上離れた公園にいたと主張しています。

刑事ドラマなどでもお馴染みのこの「アリバイ」は法律用語で現場不在証明と訳されたりもしますが、ラテン語です。

ラテン語の辞書にもalibiというスペルで載っています。「アリバイ」は英語の発音です（「ア」に強勢が置かれます）が、ラテン語はローマ字読みしますので、その発音は「アリビー」のようになります。

ラテン語alibiの品詞は副詞であり、他の所で（また、他の点で、他の人によって）というような意味ですが、ラテン語alius（英単語のanotherに相当）とibi（英単語のthereに相当）が組み合わさったものです。

アタマを使え！ということでしょうか。

加齢による認知機能の低下は、頭脳労働に従事する人に比べて、単純労働に従事する人でリスクが高いという研究成果が報告されました。

身体機能は使わなければ衰えると言われますが、脳も同じということで、引用した記事の冒頭、

はまさにそのことを言っています。

ここで使われている、

noggin

は見慣れない単語ですが、人間のアタマ（頭）、「おつむ」を意味する口語表現であると辞書にあります。

語源不詳とされていますが、"noggin"というのはマグカップを指し、またカップの中身の液体をも意味するようになって、液量単位としての1/4パイントを指す語でもあります。

"noggin"というスペルから"nog"（eggnog）が想起されますが、アルコール飲料を指すイングランド方言の"nog"とも関連があるようです。

ですが、アタマ、「おつむ」という意味で使われるようになったのはアメリカ英語での話で、詳しい経緯は分かっていないようです。
