私は今年の春、この作品を作りました。
「スコットランドへの旅」。
I made this work in this spring."A Journey to Scotland".
源流はエジンバラのスコットランド博物館に所蔵されているこの着物です。
The origin is this Amip (kimono) that is possessed in the National Scotland Museum in Edinburgh.

なぜ二風谷産のこの美しい着物がスコットランドにあるのか、ずっと不思議でした。
しかしいろいろと調べものをしていて、一人の人物に出会いました。
それがこの人です。
I had wondered why this beautiful kimono from Nibutani is in Scotland.
But I knew a gentleman when I researched another things.
It's him.
彼はスコットランドの医師であり、石器時代の研究者でもありました。
研究のためにインド、香港、横浜を経由して北海道の平取町二風谷に移住。
1942年に亡くなるまでずっと結核を患ったアイヌたちの診療に人生を費やしました。
He was a medical doctor and a researcher of Stone age, too.
He moved to Nibutani in Biratori town, Hokkaido after India, Hong Kong, Yokohama for research.
He spent the life for the medical treatment of Ainu who suffered from tuberculosis all the time until he died in 1942.
妻チヨさんは看護師でもありました。
His wife Chiyo san was a nurse, too.
旧マンロー邸。
Old Munro residence.
ここでマンロー先生は診療を行っていたそうです。
Dr. Munro seemed to do medical treatment here.
一方で、研究も怠ることなく続けていました。
彼の業績は現在でも貴重な資料です。
On the other hand, he continued the study, too.
His achievements are precious documents now.
私が死んだら、アイヌと同じように葬ってほしい。
When I die, I want you to bury me in the same way as Ainu.
彼はそう言い遺して1942年の4月に亡くなりました。
1942年と言えば太平洋戦争が始まった頃です。
日本国内では欧米人やアイヌに対する迫害がもっとも大きかったはずです。
マンロー先生は今でも慕われ、平取では毎年「マンロー先生を偲ぶ会」が開かれているそうです。
He said so, and died in April, 1942.
It is about time when the Pacific War began in April, 1942.
The persecution for Europeans and Americans and Ainu should have been the biggest in Japan.
He has been loved now, "A memorial meeting of Dr.Munro" seems to be held every year in Biratori town.

マンロー先生の大好物のこのクッキー、当時は奥さまのチヨさんは村の子どもたちにも作っていらしたそうです。
Dr.Munro loved this cookie, and his wife Chiyo san seemed to make this cookie for children in the village, too.

Japanese dogwood.
ようちゃんと一緒に食べました。
私は種をプップップッと口から飛ばす昭和の女。
ようちゃんは種を一つ一つ手に出して丁寧に投げる平成の男。
I ate them with Yo chan.
I am a woman of Showa era who splash the seeds from mouth.
Yo chan is a man of Heisei era who takes out seeds in a hand one by one and throw them up carefully.
これは夏の姿。
ぜんぶ実になりました。
When it was in summer.
They all became fruits.
ムクドリ。
Mukndori (White-cheeked starling).
内地では留鳥ですが、北海道では夏鳥です。
きゅるるるる、きゅるるるる、等間隔です。
They are permanent birds in Honshu, but are summer birds in Hokkaido.
Kyurrrrr, krurrrrrr, they line up at even intervals.
私の縫い目も等間隔になればいいのに。
I hope my stitch to be even intervals.
