山口県下関市で昭和４０年に発見され、ことし６月になって国内初の種類と確認された恐竜の卵の化石の展示が１８日から下関市の博物館で始まりました。
この化石は５２年前の昭和４０年に、当時、高校生だった神奈川県の男性が山口県下関市の綾羅木川の上流にある１億２０００万年から１億年前の白亜紀前期の地層で見つけ保管していたもので、専門機関が分析した結果、ことし６月、国内で初めて見つかった種類の恐竜の卵の化石だと確認されました。
この恐竜の卵の化石が初めて里帰りし、１８日から下関市の考古博物館で展示が始まり、午前中から多くの人が訪れています。
化石は大きさが２センチから７センチほどの卵の殻の破片９点で、殻の厚さが３．７ミリと厚いことや呼吸するための気孔の構造などが肉食恐竜の卵と似た特徴があるということです。
見学に訪れた人たちは化石を眺めながら、１億年以上前の恐竜の姿に思いをはせていました。
下関市立考古博物館の濱崎真二館長補佐は「大変貴重な化石なので多くの方に見てもらい、太古の昔を感じ取ってもらえれば」と話していました。
恐竜の卵の化石は、来年１月２１日まで下関市立考古博物館で展示されます。
