Hundreds attend dinner and auction to raise funds for Montgomery shooting victim’s recovery

An event was held tonight to raise money for a woman who was shot and paralyzed while stopped at a traffic light in Montgomery last month. April 12 was the day that Amy Dicks’ life changed forever. She continues her recovery at Shepard Center in Atlanta which specializes in helping people with spinal cord injuries. Tuesday night, friends and family gathered in Montgomery County for a dinner to help raise money that will go towards her recovery.

Several hundred people filled the Whippoorwill Venue in Mathews to browse items that were donated for the Silent Auction. A dinner followed the auction. The evening was a chance for the community to rally behind the Dicks family and show their support. Attendees watched a video that Amy sent from her hospital room, and she thanked everyone for their prayers. The money raised will go towards her extensive medical bills and making her home is wheelchair accessible in the future.

Amy’s sister-in-law Ashleigh Dicks spoke for the family.  “We have had great community involvement and the support has been amazing. I don’t think that we could do this without the support and love and prayers from these families and from our community. It’s a really hard situation. Amy has good days and she has bad days, but we’re just trying to help her get through it.”

Frank Livingston is the owner of the Whippoorwill. “This community has always been a great community (to help out) if somebody is in trouble. I’ve been here all my life in south Montgomery County and everybody tends to mind their own business and (they) don’t bother anybody. But when somebody is in trouble, we come out and the response to this has been overwhelming. It has just been hard to comprehend.”

So far, no one has been arrested in connection with this shooting that happened on the Atlanta Highway. A $15,000 reward has been offered for any information in this case. If you have a tip, call CrimeStoppers at (334) 215-STOP.
