曲は英国の伝統的なﾌｫｰｸ･ｿﾝｸﾞです 。ｷﾂﾈが寒い夜に出かけ た古い歌で最も初期のﾊﾞｰｼﾞｮﾝは､ 大英博物館で発見された15世紀の中頃の英語の詩です。なお､3番の歌詞「quack」にはﾙの鳴き声（ｸﾜｯｸﾜｯ）、ｲｶｻﾏ、ｲﾝﾁｷの意味が掛けてあります。また､ 1810年にはWendy Watson（ｳｪﾝﾃﾞｨ･ﾜﾄｿﾝ）によって”The Nighttime Escapades Of A Crafty FoxFox”と1961年には Peter Spier（ﾋﾟｰﾀｰ･ｽﾊﾟｲｱ）によって”Went Out on a Chilly Night”という二冊の絵本も出版されています。

そして､Burl Ivesは1949年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ” A Collection Of Ballads And Folk Songs, Volume I”にPete Seegerは1955年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ” Birds Beasts Bugs And Bigger Fishes ”にThe Brothers Four‎は1960年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ ”Rally 'Round”にPeter, Paul & Maryは1995年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ” Peter, Paul & Mommy, Too”に1989年にｶﾘﾌｫﾙﾆｱで結成されたﾌﾞﾙｰｸﾞﾗｽﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞ､Nickel Creek（ﾆｯｹﾙ･ｸﾘｰｸ ）は 2000年ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Nickel Creek”にそして､The KingstonTrioのBob Shaneはす。2008年､ｿﾛｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ "The World Needs A Melody"に曲を収録しています。

Blowed his horn both loud and shrill,

There were the little ones eight, nine, ten.

What it gave the grey goose to is wife
 Cut it up with a carving knife

ｼﾞｮﾆｰは丘の上に着いた
彼の警笛を大きな音で激しく吹いた。
ｷﾂﾈ、彼は言った､ 「私を殺して逃げる方がいい
なぜなら､もうすぐ私の後を追って､追って､追ってくる。」

さて､ｷﾂﾈは私のためにのねぐらに戻って来た
小さなｷﾂﾈが8､9､10匹いた

それはすごく大きな素晴らしい町に､町に､町に違いないから」

まあ､灰色のｶﾞﾁｮｳを料理したのは妻です
肉切包丁でｶﾞﾁｮｳを切る
彼らは彼らの一生の中でこんな分け前に預かったことない
そして､小さなｷﾂﾈは骨を､骨を､骨をかみ砕いた
