Psalm 136: The One with Whom We Fight
1. taste the grace of the Lord
This is a truly technical psalm, designed for worship. For each verse, a Levite or leader sings the first half of each verse, and the congregation sings and chants the second half, "The grace of the Lord is everlasting. It is also a practical hymn to Psalm 135, the last verse, "Praise the Lord.
First, the Israelites recall God's wonderful work of creation (vv. 5-9). After all, this is where biblical faith all begins. Faith in "God, who created the heavens and the earth in the beginning of all things" is the starting point. We acknowledge the God who, in his wisdom, created everything on earth and prepared every stage for us. It is to acknowledge the God who opens the curtain of history and eventually closes it.
The Israelites then recall a number of events in which their God of creation intervened in the history of their people and specifically helped them. Three historical events are mentioned. The grace of the Exodus (vv. 10-15), the grace of the wilderness journey and the conquest of Canaan (vv. 16-20), and the grace of their resting in the land of Canaan (vv. 21-22). In each of those events, the Lord's active grace was well manifested. God has indeed intervened, taken sides, and walked with Israel in its history.
In this sense, when we look back on our own history, we should count up the Lord's grace and praise Him for the abundant manifestations of His grace. We should not just believe in the Lord or just go to church, but we should walk praising the Lord daily, savoring the work of God who intervenes in our lives and pours out His grace.
2. the Holy Spirit with us
The Holy Spirit is called comforter in English. The Holy Spirit is the one who soothes and cheers up suffering, sorrow, and the like. The Holy Spirit is invisible, but the Bible tells us that there is one who is with us and works as an encourager. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is called the Helper and Comforter. However, the first prefix "com" in English means together. The image of community, or communion, conveys this meaning well. And as for the second word "fort," fort means fortress or battle, as in Fort Alamo, which is translated as Fortress of the Alamo. In other words, "Comforter" and "Helper" are often used to refer to the Holy Spirit, but it originally means much more than that. The Holy Spirit is more than a comforter; He is a fighter with us, a fortress for us. When we are hurt in various ways in this world and finally arrive at the church, the Holy Spirit does not just pat us on the head and comfort us, but He is the One who fights with us and overcomes hardships with us in our daily lives.
3. the lord is mindful
The last verses, 23-26, are the conclusion. What is noteworthy here is verse 23, "When we were humbled, the Lord was mindful of us. As we learned in the earlier Psalm, God chose us, but not for any rational reason. It was based on the logic of irrational love. And because of His love, God takes us to heart and feels our pain when we are humbled. He also feels our pain and does what is right. He is a God who feels and acts. We cannot help but praise God for His deep grace.
The God of creation, who intervened in the history of the Israelites, is not an old story. God is still intervening in the lives of those who trust in Him, in all walks of life, working all things for good. God is alive. Let us give thanks to the Lord and walk with Him today. I pray that today will be another good day.
