◆Fernandez leads Europeans after short program
http://news.yahoo.com/fernandez-leads-europeans-short-program-150905601.html?soc_src=mediacontentstory&soc_trk=tw
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Javier Fernandez of Spain took a strong lead in his quest for a third consecutive European figure skating championship with a dynamic short program to the raucous rocker "Black Betty" on Wednesday.

Fernandez stepped out of his opening, speedy quadruple salchow, and out of the second part of the following triple-triple combination, but then marshaled his control for an explosive triple axel.

Although he appeared to be having trouble containing his enthusiasm, he laughingly faulted himself for just the opposite.

"Actually, this time I was a bit too calm," he said. "I know what I did wrong and I'll fix that."

Fernandez has a substantial mid-point lead of more than eight points over second-place Sergei Voronov of Russia.

Voronov opened his program to Camille Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" with a clean quad-triple toe loop combination, then disappointingly pulled off a double axel instead of the expected triple. Late in the program came an assured triple loop.

He didn't explain why he chose the double axel even while looking strong in his other jumps, but spoke of some weariness with the rigors of the season.

"This is my eighth competition, so maybe it's a little tough for me. It's not about the pressure ... it's just that things didn't go the way I wished they would go," he said.

The Czech Republic's Michal Brezina was third, just 0.2 points behind Voronov, undone by a mistake late in the program when he fell on a triple flip that was to be the first part of a combination, and he didn't find opportunity to insert the jump into the time remaining.

Making the best of a bad moment, Brezina said the fall showed him how supportive the sparse crowd in Stockholm's Globen arena could be.

"The people were great. They helped me a lot when I fell, because I was ready to get off the ice," he said.

Russia's Maxim Kovtun also missed his planned combination, stepping out of the opening triple salchow and not taking the opportunity to tack it on later. He ended in fourth, still well in medal range.

◆International Skating Union Press Release
Javier Fernandez (ESP) wins Men’s Short Program

Spain’s Javier Fernandez took the first step to defending his European title by winning the Men’s Short Program. Sergei Voronov of Russia sits in second followed by Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic.

Skating to “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, Fernandez hit a good triple Axel, but fell out of his quad Salchow and stepped out of the triple Lutz-triple toe combination. The two-time European Champion recovered to pick up a level four for the spins and footwork and scored 89.24 points. “I dealt with the pressure well today, this time my problem was that I was too relaxed, in fact Brian (Orser, coach) said to me that I was working at "level 2" (second gear), sometimes it is very difficult to find a good balance between being very excited and/or skating too relaxed”, the World bronze medalist noted.

Voronov opened his program to “Danse Macabre” with a quadruple-triple toeloop combination, but he doubled the Axel. He also executed a triple loop and three level-four spins to earn 81.06 points. In general I can’t say that everything went well, I didn’t feel the drive but it was a struggle, firstly, the struggle with myself. As it’s the eighth competition in this season, it was quite difficult to skate. The main goal for today was to overcome myself”, the reigning European silver medalist said.

Brezina’s routine to “Game of Thrones” featured a triple Axel a quad Salchow and two level-four spins, but he fell on the triple flip. The 2013 European bronze medalist picked up 80.86 points. “It felt pretty good until I fell on the combination (triple flip) which cost me around ten points. Apart from the combination I think it was my strongest performance of the season. I hope I can do better than that in the long program”, the 24-year-old commented.

Maxim Kovtun (RUS) was the only skater to attempt two quads, toe and Salchow, but stumbled on both of them. He came fourth at 78.21 points. Peter Liebers (GER) placed fifth (75.48 points) and 2011 European Champion Florent Amodio (FRA) is currently ranked sixth (74.06 points).
