｢Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?｣の作曲者は、ｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞに住んでいたｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞ系の音楽家Francis McPeake（ﾌﾗﾝｼｽ・ﾏｸﾋﾟｰｸ）､歌詞は、ｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞの詩人Robert Tannahill（ﾛﾊﾞｰﾄ・ﾀﾅﾋﾙ）がｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞを旅していた際に耳にした曲が元になっているとのことであるが、ｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞ語の詩を参考にしたとされています。
｢Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?（娘さん、一緒に行きませんか？）｣は、1957年にThe McPeake Family（ﾏｸﾋﾟｰｸ･ﾌｧﾐﾘｰ）によってﾘﾘｰｽされました。また､歌詞の一部から、ﾀｲﾄﾙは｢Wild Mountain Thyme」、｢Purple Heather」などとも表記されます。そして､歌詞のLassie(主にｽｺｯﾄ・北ｲﾝｸﾞﾗﾝﾄﾞ)少女，娘さん､｢Wild Mountain Thyme｣はｼｿ科ｲﾌﾞｷｼﾞｬｺｳｿｳ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Thymuspolytrichus。ﾖｰﾛｯﾊﾟ中部が原産で、石灰岩質の荒れ地に生息し、｢Purple Heather」は、ﾖｰﾛｯﾊﾟやｱﾌﾘｶを原産とするﾂﾂｼﾞ科のｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞの原野・湿地に多く生息する、濃い紫の花を咲かせる植物のことです。曲は様々なﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝによってｱﾚﾝｼﾞ、ｶﾊﾞｰされていくうちに、｢Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?｣は作曲者不詳のﾄﾗﾃﾞｨｼｮﾅﾙ・ﾌｫｰｸｿﾝｸﾞ的な位置づけとなりました。
1957年の初ﾘﾘｰｽ後、1963年､The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem （ｸﾗﾝｼｰ･ﾌﾞﾗｻﾞｰｽﾞ&ﾄﾐｰ･ﾒｲｹﾑ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”The Boys Won't Leave The Girls Alone”に1965年､Joan Baez（ｼﾞｮｰﾝ・ﾊﾞｴｽ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Farewell, Angelina”にThe New Christy Minstrels（ﾆｭｰｸﾘｽﾃｨｰ･ﾐﾝｽﾄﾚﾙｽﾞ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”The Wandering Minstrels”に196６年､The Byrds(ﾊﾞｰｽﾞ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Fifth Dimension”に200４年､The Rooftop Singersは未発表の曲としてｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ ”Best Of The Vanguard Years”に2005年､ｵｰｽﾄﾗﾘｱのﾌｫｰｸ･ｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟSirocco(ｼﾛｯｺ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Black is the Color”に曲を収録しました。
